Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is in the Upper Geyser Basin at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano (northwestern Wyoming, USA).

Shell Spring is a frequently erupting geyser in the Sapphire Group of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. It is located about 30 meters west of Jewel Geyser. Bulbous lobes of geyserite surround Shell Spring’s vent, with pustulose to nodulose geyserite along the periphery. Eruptions involve low to moderately low splashing. When water levels are low, a small side vent on the southwestern side of the main vent engages in chugging/rhythmic sputtering. The name “Shell Spring” is in reference to its resemblance to the folds and sulci of the interior surface of an articulated tridacnid bivalve shell (e.g., Tridacna gigas).

$Cinnamon West Geyser & Cinnamon Spouter (2025) Cinnamon West Geyser & Cinnamon Spouter (2025) Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA. Cinnamon Spouter and Cinnamon West Geyser are located in the Black Sand Basin of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. Cinnamon Spouter’s irregularly-shaped basin is 3 to 4 meters in diameter, with a centrally-located and irregularly-shaped vent area. Cinnamon West Geyser is located on the southwestern side of Cinnamon Spouter and has a subcircular basin 2 to 3 meters in diameter, with a ~1 meter diameter inner crater. Cinnamon Spouter first appeared in the late 1980s, under a tourist boardwalk. Early activity consisted of periodic geyser eruptions. The long-term, normal behavior of Cinnamon Spouter has become moderately low perpetual spouting that reaches about two meters high or less (usually much lower). After individual periodic eruptions occur in adjacent Cinnamon West Geyser (for example, in 2016), Cinnamon Spouter’s water level lowers and runoff ceases. Low-pool perpetual spouting can continue or activity can cease altogether, with water draining out of sight. Runoff water from Cinnamon Spouter drains to the south and southeast toward Iron Spring Creek. In August 2025, the distal runoff channel was completely dry - overflow was no longer occurring. In 1998, researchers measured the water temperature of Cinnamon Spouter at about 75° Celsius, with a pH of about 8.3 (= somewhat alkaline). Cinnamon West Geyser appeared subsequent to Cinnamon Spouters first appearance in the late 1980s. Cinnamon West Geyser was initially a fracture but has since widened into its present shape. Its normal behavior is low to very low perpetual spouting. It also has 1 to 2 meter tall geyser eruptions that occur in series, with hours- to days-long intervals between series. The first two eruptions in a series pour out large volumes of water for such a small feature. Water runs off toward the south and southwest and percolates downward into the geyserite / siliceous sinter gravel. $Fan Geyser (2018) (HD) Fan Geyser (2018) Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano (northwestern Wyoming, USA). Fan Geyser is a major feature in the Morning Glory Group of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. It is located on the northeastern bank of the Firehole River, just downstream from Mortar Geyser. Fan Geyser consists of a series of vents oriented along a northeast-southwest fracture zone that goes through nearby Spiteful Geyser. From southwest to northeast, the principal vents of Fan Geyser are: River Vent, High Vent, Gold Vent, Angle Vent, Main Vent, and East Vent. Eruptive activity at Fan Geyser currently takes several forms: garbage, regular cycles, event cycles, and (major) eruptions. Garbage refers to disorganized low spouting from Fans various vents. Regular cycles involve organized low spouting/splashing that starts with River Vent, progresses to High Vent and Gold Vent, and continues to Angle Vent. Eventually, the low spouting ends. Event cycles are characterized by slightly more unusual activity, including one or more pauses and resumptions in River Vent’s erupting, more energetic and higher spouting from High Vent, Gold Vent, and Angle Vent, and small splashing in the Main Vent. Major eruptions of Fan Geyser are almost always in concert with nearby Mortar Geyser (there have been exceptions in the past). Eruptions occur after an energetic event cycle and involve high spouting from East Vent, Main Vent, and all other vents. Eruption columns extend in various directions, resulting in a fan-like spray. Spouting often reaches the trail or past the trail. Eruptions are about 30 to 40 minutes in duration, and include one or more relatively brief pauses.
