I've been working on integrating spherical harmonics data structures into Resonite. Those will be used for a number of features, but are also accessible for your own use for any purpose you want!
They are a great way to efficiently encode directional data. The world ambient lighting is actually spherical harmonics and it was not able to be controlled. With this, you'll be able to!
Another thing they're also used for are Ambisonics - directional audio. Having base spherical harmonics support in Resonite makes supporting those formats pretty trivial.
They're also used in Gaussian splatting to encode the colors of each splat - being able to encode directional information lets them store effects like reflections and other specular effects.
Overall, they're a good generic primitive to have in the engine, because it's useful for lots of different features. I'll be adding some new PhotonDust modules too that will use these to change the color of a particle based on the direction it's moving.
