It's been a while, but finally we have another episode of the old South Bend 14 1/2" lathe. It was working fine so far until recently when a strange chatter appeared, more pronounced with higher tool pressure.
It turned out to be excessive play in the head stock bearing, causing the chuck to lift, even i t is pretty heavy.
See what we found and how simple the fix turned out at the end.
There is still a lot of work to do on the old girl, but as usual, other projects getting in the way.
