Sony's CFO has effectively confirmed what many of us already suspected about the push toward an all-digital future, and when you put that alongside Sony's investment in vinyl records, the whole thing gets a lot harder to defend.
An opinion and analysis piece on Sony, digital-only gaming and the vinyl contradiction.
The core of this video is simple. Sony is ending physical game disc production and steering players toward a digital-only future, and comments from Sony's own CFO make it clear this is a financially motivated decision rather than one made with consumers in mind. Digital storefronts mean no manufacturing, no distribution, no second hand market and full control over pricing and availability, and that is exactly the appeal from a business standpoint.
What makes it so much worse is vinyl. At the same time Sony is walking away from physical game media by calling it outdated, the wider industry, Sony included, has leaned into vinyl records as a premium, collectable, physical product that people clearly still want to own. You cannot credibly argue that physical media is a thing of the past while simultaneously profiting from a physical format revival. The message is not that physical is dead, it is that physical is only worth keeping when it makes the most money.
This video breaks down what the CFO actually said, why the vinyl comparison exposes the real motivation behind the disc-free push, and what it all means for the future of game ownership. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, and whether the vinyl angle changes how you see Sony's decision.
