Liston exploded from the opening bell, dropping Bethea for the first time in Bethea's career with a savage combination beginning with a right hand to the jaw. Bethea rose after the mandatory eight-count but was immediately overwhelmed by another Liston attack. Referee Bernie Weismann stopped the fight at 1:09 of the first round.
The Associated Press report described Liston's attack as a barrage of heavy rights and lefts. The UPI reported that Bethea lost seven teeth during the one-round fight.
An important piece of context: Liston's trainer Jimmy Wilson died of a heart condition in Philadelphia the night before the fight, aged 54. Immediately afterward, International Boxing Club president Truman Gibson said he would offer heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson a $250,000 guarantee to fight Liston in Chicago.
