After twenty rounds of fighting, clinching, and trotting around the ring at the Pacific Athletic Club to-night, the battle for the heavyweight championship of the world between Jack O'Brien, of Philadelphia and Tommy Burns of Detroit was declared a draw by Referee Jim Jeffries.
Tommy Burns and Jack “Philadelphia” O’Brien met for a second time on November 6, 1906, in Los Angeles, California, in a 20-round heavyweight bout. Their first meeting earlier that year ended in a draw, making this rematch highly anticipated on the West Coast.
Burns, a fast and mobile heavyweight, outworked O’Brien over the course of the contest with superior stamina and combination punching. He won by points decision, setting the stage for his future reign as World Heavyweight Champion. This bout is one of the earliest filmed examples of gloved heavyweight boxing in the 20th century.
