On 20 June 1940, Joe Louis defended the World Heavyweight Championship against Arturo Godoy at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, USA.
The bout was a rematch of their closely contested first fight earlier that year. This time Louis left no doubt, dominating the challenger and scoring a technical knockout in Round 8 of the scheduled 15-round championship fight.
Louis dropped Godoy late in the seventh round and twice more in the eighth before the referee stopped the contest. The victory marked the 11th successful defense of Louis’ heavyweight title and one of the most decisive performances of his reign.
