The referee failed to stop the fight in time. Paret fell into a coma and died 10 days later.
In Round 12, Griffith unleashed a prolonged combination while Paret was trapped against the ropes, causing a devastating knockout. Paret collapsed in the ring and never regained consciousness. He died ten days later from brain injuries sustained in the fight.
