Something is rising beneath the ocean near Papua New Guinea — and scientists are watching closely.
A newly discovered underwater volcano known as Titan Ridge has erupted from deep beneath the ocean surface, sending a plume reported to reach tens of thousands of feet. What makes this event extraordinary is that this volcano was not even recognized as an active volcano before the eruption — it was only recently added to geological maps of the region.
In this video, we examine the real satellite imagery, eyewitness reports, eruption data, and historical examples of islands that formed from submarine volcanic eruptions. We also compare Titan Ridge to the famous Hunga Tonga eruption, which created an island that survived seven years — and then destroyed it, in front of our eyes.
