Three volcanoes on three different sides of the planet are active at the same time right now — and I wanted to show you exactly what's going on with each one.
We start with Mount Etna in Sicily, Europe's biggest volcano, which has escalated dramatically in recent days with summit activity and ash forcing changes at the airport below. Then we travel to the Sunda Strait in Indonesia to look at Anak Krakatau — the "child" that grew out of the caldera left behind by one of the deadliest eruptions in recorded history — now back on a raised alert. And finally Mayon in the Philippines, the near-perfect cone that's been quietly erupting for months, with lava creeping down its flanks.
Using Google Earth and real footage (with attribution to the people who captured it), we get close-up views of each volcano, the vents, the lava, and the populated areas sitting right next to them.
