For more than 25 years, astronomers thought asteroid 1998 KY26 was about 30 meters across. New observations changed everything.
It turns out this object is only about 11 meters wide — roughly the size of a small house. Yet it spins once every 5.35 minutes, making it one of the fastest-rotating asteroids ever studied. Its unusually bright surface, rare composition, and possible links to the emerging "dark comet" category have left scientists with more questions than answers.
