It is all about hard work. Maybe someone only recieved a few lessons but they practied what they learned with training partners until they grew it into a great thing. Bodi learned the entire lesson in silence looking at a flower....so why not?
Prof. Leung Ting is an expert on numerous Chinese martial arts and he wrote several famous booklets of a few in the 1970's and 80's. Anyone who does WT can see our own sets in these books, just that they do not follow the centerline theory. In those days before VCR tape, a WT could use these photsets to learn our own forms from posters and our own basic drills from the Dynamic WT booklet. So it was an obvious step to try these other methods out after afew years, and when fine tuned using WT Centerline Theroy and close in fighting, they can be very much like a WT section.
Recently I saw a Mantis demo, and it reminded me of this 7 Star Mantis publication from 1980.
