I won’t waste words speculating about what the acronym means -- it’s better to let this song speak for itself (though maybe the first line has something to do with it?). “L.M.F” was the first single to release off of Smino’s sophomore album NOIR, which gave "blkswn" fans hope for a very different, yet equally lovable follow-up to his 2017 masterpiece. With his team of trusted collaborators, Smino delivers an 18-track album full of some of the most creative cadences, wild rhymes, and captivating contortions of his voice in an all too seemingly effortless display of his lyrical and stylistic genius.
On this track, Smino teams up once again with the genre-bending Seattle-based producer Sango to take his listeners on a journey new and exciting, exploring and playing with many dimensions of language that I feel are often underutilized in mainstream rap. Against a backdrop of Sango’s breezy Brazilian funk-inspired beats, he unapologetically bends and cuts syllables to shape them into perfectly rhythmic lines and uses wordplay to squeeze multiple different meanings out of the same homonym. And on top of it all, he maintains loyalty to his roots by incorporating aspects of gospel, stamping the rather brief 3-minute track with his distinctive soulful brand.
All in all, “L.M.F” is a fun, upbeat listen that’s engages not necessarily through the meaning of its lyrics, but rather how they are delivered. With this track, Smino reiterates that he deserves to be recognized alongside some of the bigger names like Chance, Vince, and Earl.
