SkyFire Energy, one of Alberta's oldest solar companies, just acquired Hakai Energy Solutions, diversifying their markets into Coastal British Columbia. The move also adds battery storage expertise and off-grid experience to their offerings.
The move comes as utility-scale solar in Alberta has collapsed under the weight of a moratorium, policies hostile to large-scale renewables, and high levels of market uncertainty.
At 25 years old, SkyFire is used to the ups and downs of the industry and has from day one focused on a diversified focus on home, commercial, and utility-scale solar. And they have slowly diversified their geographic markets as well.
We talk to SkyFire CEO David Vonesch about the acquisition and the company's diversified approach.
Apparently, rooftop and commercial solar is still growing quickly in Alberta, but utility-scale projects have all but vanished.
Billions of investment have vanished from Alberta too, moving to markets like British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec.
