What happens when a Japanese extreme metal band decides that black metal, death metal, progressive rock, traditional Japanese music, psychedelia, classical music, doom and even mariachi aren't enough?

You get Sigh – Goh-ka.

In this review, I take a look at the new album from one of Japan's most unique and adventurous extreme metal bands. While Japanese metal has become increasingly popular through bands like Babymetal, Lovebites and Band-Maid, Sigh represent a very different, and much darker, side of Japan's metal scene.

I also talk about my personal history with the band, including my review of Shiki from 2022, which became one of my favorite albums of that year.

We'll look at the concept behind Goh-ka, including the Buddhist Kuso-zu imagery and the nine stages of decomposition that inspire the Kuso-shi pieces. Then I'll go track by track through this incredibly strange and ambitious album.

And yes... there is even some mariachi.

Is Goh-ka one of the best and most original metal albums of 2026?

Let me know what you think of the album in the comments!

And if you haven't seen my original Sigh – Shiki review from 2022, check it out at the end of the video.
