Here are two acetate recordings highlighting Sidney Bechet's wonderful clarinet playing. The first short extract is called, apparently, "Riffin'". It sounds like it might be an opening / closing theme. Apart from Bechet, the date, personnel and location is unknown.
Following this, there is an excellent, swinging version of "One O'Clock Blues". This was recorded by John D Reid on January 21st, 1940, at Gloversville, New York State, where Bechet was performing with his New Orleans Feetwarmers. The personnel is: Sidney Bechet - clarinet, Sonny White - piano, Charlie Howard - electric guitar, Ernest Wilson Myers - bass, Manzie Johnson - drums. (The piano sounds rather worn!).
John Reid was a recording engineer who worked for RCA Victor and persuaded the company to record Bechet in 1940-1941. He also had an acetate machine and recorded Bechet privately at clubs etc.
