Philip Lewis And His Orchestra (a.k.a. the Rhythm Maniacs) play the classic "Tiger Rag". Solos/breaks by Sylvester Ahola, Danny Polo (clarinet) and a rare instance of a cymbal solo, played by Max Bacon. In fact, Max's excellent cymbal work is predominant throughout the recording.

DJ-43-3…….Tiger Rag…….Decca F-1540

The electrical recording system Decca used in its first studio, situated on the first floor in the Chenil Gallery (an old art gallery next door to Chelsea Town Hall, London) produced poor results due to a number of technical problems. On this side, blasting and distortion are very noticeable. Things didn't improve until the studio was refitted in October 1929.

The songwriter credit for "Tiger Rag" has long been a matter of dispute, but whatever its origin, it certainly wasn't written by James Monaco, who is given composer credit on the Decca label! Music publishers and record companies usually credit Nick La Rocca of the Original Dixieland Jazz band as the composer; sometimes they credit the entire band.
