Standard Sicilian is a Romance language belonging to the Italo-Dalmatian group, spoken primarily in Sicily, central-southern Calabria, and the Salento peninsula. While a universally spoken and rigidly codified standard is less prevalent than in national languages, a rich literary koine exists, tracing its origins to the influential Sicilian School of poetry in the 13th century. Linguistically, it is characterized by a five-vowel system (lacking the mid-vowels of Standard Italian), distinct retroflex consonants such as /ɖ/, and a highly stratified lexicon that reflects centuries of successive administration by Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, and Spaniards.
Standard Modern Greek constitutes the major surviving independent branch of the Hellenic subgroup within the Indo-European language family. The modern official standard is primarily based on Demotic Greek—the natural vernacular—while retaining select vocabulary and grammatical elements from Katharevousa, a 19th-century purist, archaic written form. Spoken natively by roughly 13.5 million people, mostly in Greece and Cyprus, the language features a simplified five-vowel system compared to its ancient predecessor, the complete loss of the dative case, and a highly fusional morphology with an intricate, aspect-driven verbal system.
The linguistic influence between the two is highly asymmetrical, flowing almost entirely from Greek into Sicilian due to the ancient colonization of Magna Graecia and the subsequent centuries of Byzantine rule. Greek served as a profound substratum and adstratum for Sicilian, contributing hundreds of everyday agricultural and domestic loanwords—such as babbaluciu (snail, from the Greek boubalákion)—as well as significant phonetic and syntactic shifts. Most notably, some southern dialects of Sicilian mirror the Balkan sprachbund feature found in Modern Greek by replacing the infinitive verb with a subordinate clause structure, whereas Sicilian has had virtually no historical or structural impact on the development of Standard Modern Greek.
