Belarusian is an East Slavic language spoken primarily in Belarus and by Belarusian communities in neighboring countries and abroad, with around 5–7 million speakers worldwide. It is closely related to Russian and Ukrainian, sharing much of their grammar and vocabulary, but it has its own distinct pronunciation, spelling, and literary traditions. Belarusian developed from the medieval Ruthenian language once used in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and has historically been written in both Cyrillic and Latin scripts. Although Russian is more dominant in everyday life in Belarus today, Belarusian remains an important symbol of national identity, culture, literature, folklore, and history.
Latvian is a Baltic language spoken mainly in Latvia and by Latvian communities around the world, with about 1.5–2 million speakers. It is one of the two surviving Baltic languages, alongside Lithuanian, and belongs to the East Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. Latvian uses the Latin alphabet and has developed its own distinct grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, shaped by centuries of contact with Germanic, Slavic, and Finnic languages. The language has a rich tradition of folk songs, poetry, and literature, and it remains a central part of Latvian national identity, cultural heritage, and everyday life.
