● Eastern Bengali and Typical (Central) Eastern Bengali dialect (Manikganj varient):
Eastern Bengali, also known as Bôṅgali/Baṅgal, Vaṅga or Vaṅgiya Dialect, is a dialect cluster of the Bengali language predominantly spoken across most of Bangladesh and the Indian state of Tripura, encompassing the majority of the Bengal region and its surrounding areas. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. Eastern Bengali comprises various vernacular dialects, including subdivisions such as Eastern, Southeastern, Western, and Southwestern Vaṅga, as classified by linguists like Suniti Kumar Chatterji and Gopal Haldar. The dialects exhibit distinct phonological and grammatical features that set them apart from Standard Bengali, such as simplified phoneme inventories and unique forms of verbal inflections. Eastern Bengali is distributed across multiple administrative divisions in Bangladesh, such as Sylhet, Chittagong, Dhaka, Barisal, Mymensingh, Khulna, and also in parts of Assam and Tripura in India. It is primarily a rural language, spoken mostly in countryside areas, and is heavily influenced by Islamic culture, as the majority of its speakers are Muslim. Unlike Standard Bengali, Eastern Bengali does not have any standardized written form and is largely a spoken vernacular, though it may be written informally using the Bengali script. Despite being widely spoken, the dialect cluster shows significant internal diversity and has various local names reflecting its widespread cultural and regional presence. Within this broader cluster, Central Eastern Bengali—also known as the Central Bôṅgali dialect group—is spoken primarily across the modern Bangladeshi divisions of Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, and Barisal, including areas such as Chandpur in the Chittagong Division. This subgroup forms the basis of the de facto Standard Eastern Bengali, particularly the variety associated with the Greater Dhaka-Bikrampur-Manikganj region, which closely aligns with what is often termed “Typical East Bengali.” It features distinctive phonological and morphological traits, such as unique verb suffixes and vowel mergers, distinguishing it from both Standard Bengali and other Eastern Bengali dialects. In today’s video, we are going to explore the Central Eastern Bengali dialect, focusing specifically on the variety spoken in the Manikganj District of the Greater Dhaka region.
