When you go to the theatre or a cinema, press the side button on your Apple Watch and tap the BAFTA-like face masks icon to turn on Theatre Mode. That mutes the Watch, stops the screen flaring up when you turn your wrist, and while notifications will still tap you on the wrist, they won’t make a sound.
