$Road 551 In Iceland And The Cool Ice Road On The Glacier Langjökull Road 551 is very special because its mainly used to access the famous man made ice caves so it extends from the edge of the retreating glacier from June until September when it starts to snow again. Its fairly easy to get to the base-camp but the glacier it self is only usable for well equipped cars. We didnt go all the way to the ice cave because the trail became hard to spot and the glacier is very fractured this time of year so we didnt want to risk drifting from the safe trail that was still open when we were there in late August 2025.
