This is the last of a 3-part discussion about antennas in mountains. In this video I discuss the XPOL-2, or panel antennas in general for mountain areas, and why they would be beneficial.

Why would you use an XPOL-2 over an LPDA or a Yagi antenna in a mountainous area?
So, in a previous video, I expressed my preference for LPDA antennas in rugged areas, remote areas, because of the antenna gain being consistent from low to high, and I also explained why Yagi antenna can be really beneficial because it is single frequency only, but it is a much higher gain in that single frequency, but it won't work across the band for all the applications in 4G that you might need it to be.

The thing with the panel antenna, first of all, the XPOL-2 is a good example of those, it is a smaller form factor. So, it's a simpler antenna. It would be easier to install, and the gain is good. The gain is at the low end. It is probably going to be about 7 DBI, and it goes up to 12, 11 DBI in the 5G band. If you're on a mountain, the low gain can sometimes work in your advantage. First of all, you have a MIMO antenna, so there's really two elements or aspects of radiation in the antenna itself. They are cross ball, meaning polarization comes in slant 45, plus 45 and minus 45. That is same as with the other ones, but it's already there. With the LPDA you need to install two and you need to have a whole bracket installation to make that work. The future model will be slightly simpler, but it's still two antennas. Same with the Yagi. You will need to antenna us with the XPOL-2 on the other hand, it's a simple, single antenna that you can put on the roof.

Low gain is not always bad. It actually is quite clean and good. Now, if you look at the mountain behind me and so forth, there would be reflections coming from all places. That's what I want to do. I have a clean line of sight, because that's, in mountain areas, just not the way it's going to be. You will have reflections. You will have multiple, and you may actually get reflections that may be useful to you from areas that you wouldn't expect. So you will focus your antenna in the main direction. That's what you would do. That's what you plan for. But you may find when there's certain changes in the weather.

I mean, the example behind me, it's in the Rockies here in Colorado. I mean, it's snowing. There's going to be a lot of water that's in the environment, and on the surface. It's going to be a completely different ecosystem for you as a user, than in summer, where it is now. It doesn't feel like summer does it because there's quite a bit of ice still on the actual mountains, but that's the thing. The environment is going to change. Reflections might come from one direction or another direction as time goes through the whole year and through different seasons.

And it's simply to install if 7, 8 DBI is enough for you, and the installation that simpler is of interest to you, XPOL-2 is going to be the antenna of preference for those circumstances. And it's for this reason that it's often very important and probably quite beneficial to get somebody out, to do an installation for you, because it's hard for you to gauge when you go on a website such as RFShop.com.au, and just say that one or that one or that one. In our case, give us a call, give us an explanation. Potentially give us some site photos so we can have a good discussion about what you need to do. And also think logically about all the options between those antennas available. That which one would be best.

Our kits, they cater for the XPOL-2. XPOL-2 is an absolute gem. It works really well in many applications and mountain areas as well. So look for the XPOL-2, but if you have any doubts, if you have any questions, give us a call or give us an email RFShop.com.au. We have a little pop up message center as well, and there will be somebody behind it that's going to have a discussion with you or send us an email if you're overseas and you're in another time zone as well. We are quite willing to help you, but we're creating these YouTube channels as well so that you can get yourself some material whatever time you are wherever in the future, you may look at this specific type of video.
