Since the end of 2020, our researchers engaged over 100 stakeholders and experts in a foresight process looking at the future of EU’s Open Strategic Autonomy by 2040 and beyond.
The objective? To examine what are existing strengths, areas for improvement and identify emerging challenges and future opportunities of open strategic autonomy that the European Union faces in the next decades. The foresight analysis looks at 5 different areas: geopolitics, technology, economy, environment and society.
The results of this process and analysis fed into the 2021 Strategic Foresight Report and are fully detailed in the JRC’s science for policy report: “Shaping and securing the EU’s Strategic Autonomy by 2040 and beyond”.

The Joint Research Centre, in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), has set up the European Consumer Food Waste Forum in order to address consumer food waste. Researchers and practitioners work together to find solutions and develop tools to help reduce consumer food waste. The EC Knowledge Centre for Bioeconomy coordinates the dissemination of the Forums activities.
