Its that time again for The Severn Valley's premier autumn steam gala and this year would see four visiting steam engines grace the SVR and put on some fine displays for passengers and linesiders. As always there was lots of variety with the weather as we come to expect in September. In this video we focus solely on the visiting engines with a few of the homefleet showcasing.
In regards to the visiting engines, the Severn Valley would welcome back a mainline star in form of LMS Royal Scot class 46115 'Scots Guardsman' which was making its autumn gala debut, having only just made its first appearance on the railway back in July 2024. Great to have this loco back, though it really should be out and earning its keep on the mainline
Also making its first ever appearance in preservation on the Severn Valley Railway is the former LMS Class 2 Ivatt tank which is visiting courtesy of Isle Of Wight Steam Railway. These type of smaller locos are always widely appreciated on the railway as they fit the branchline feel and always look the part on the local timetabled services.
For the final two visitors, gala attendees would get a good dollop of Great Western action with the visit of the Dean Forest Railway's Pannier tank 9681 which would be a big draw as we would get to witness double headed panniers, with 9681 pairing up with the Severn Valley resident 7714 and it just so happens, that for me, this was the standout performance from the gala as you'll witness at the start of the video. The final Great Western visitor would make the short trip from the Cotswolds and we were delighted to capture the '2884' class heavy freight locomotive '3850' which looked superb on both goods and passenger services and no doubt was a firm favourite across the weekend.
As I touched on above this video lends its focus to the visiting stars. Four of the homefleet feature, with the new rising star that is GWR Large Prairie 4150 which has just returned to service after decades of restoration. The other homefleet locos were GWR 813 which is seen on goods duty at Arley. LMS Stanier mogul 13268 features briefly and of course Pannier Tank 7714 teamed up with the visiting pannier.
The video duration is on the shorter side as I'm filming single handily at the moment so apologies for that. But hopefully there's enough lineside action to keep you entertained.
