LMS Jubilee 45699 'Galatea' continues to run in two different guises with two different numbers 45627 & 45562 and while this is frustrating for enthusiasts and many others, our annoyance would be soon tempered with a roaring performance from the former Barry wreck, as its seen putting down the power and shifting along very nicely on the Railway Touring Company 'Cotswold Venturer' from London to Worcester.
This was one of our shorter days and the results were very pleasing. We start off at Little Haresfield just south of Gloucester where Galatea is seen joining the Bristol to Birmingham mainline having just come off Standish Junction and the power is now well and truly being put down as the Jubilee forges north. The next scene is just up at the line at Haresfield, we again see the locomotive going through the paces. With the train stopping at Gloucester Yard and Cheltenham this gave us a chance to jump ahead which we just about managed. First up we see Galatea speeding along away from Stoke Orchard and then rounding the bend in full glory at Fiddington. Swiftly after, about a mile further up the line at Ashchurch we witness a Jubilee in full flight running through the station in the low 70's, barnstorming stuff ! We did try again to jump ahead of its operational pathing stop at Eckington but with the train running late and in turn us losing time we arrived at our location as it passed.
We just had the one shot planned for the return leg and 'the old tried and tested' would see us return to one of our favourite locations at Besford or Croome Perry, as its known to the locals or photographers. The first scene gives you an extensive look down the long straight towards Abbotswood Junction in the direction of Worcester, this is the start of the racetrack which runs to Cheltenham. While its not the most of photogenic spots its a great location to capture a steam engine on the charge as they look to get up to there permitted speed, which usually occurs a few miles further on but for us its a place that always provides a good soundtrack and even finishes with a nice shot on the curve.
In the end this would top off a great day with a top condition LMS Jubilee doing the business and what's even better was there was no need for a diesel ! A good day for all concerned.
