A Parasite That Increases Risk of Bladder Cancer (Schistosomiasis & Bladder Cancer)

Schistosomiasis (also known as Bilharziasis) is a condition caused by infection with blood flukes (parasitic trematodes) known as Schistosoma species. There are multiple species that cause infection, including Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum and others. However, one species affects the bladder more specifically, and that species is Schistosoma hematobium. In this lesson, we discuss this species, how individuals become infected, some of the signs and symptoms, how it increases risk of bladder cancer, how it's diagnosed and how it's treated.
