Anthrax (Skin, Lungs, Intestines) | Pathophysiology, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Anthrax is an infection caused by the gram positive bacteria Bacillus anthracis. It survives in the soil in spore-form, lasting for many years and in some cases decades. Infection with B. anthracis can lead to clinical variants including Cutaneous Anthrax, Pulmonary Anthrax and Intestinal Anthrax, each with their own symptomatology. In this lesson, we discuss how individuals get infected, routes of infection, pathophysiology including how Anthrax toxins function to cause illness, and we also discuss the symptoms, diagnostic methods and treatment modalities.
