When you think of the scariest horror movie scene of all time, the one that come to mind is probably the red ball bouncing down the stairs in The Changeling (Peter Medak, 1980). Stephen King himself agrees: "just a child's ball bouncing down a flight of stairs was enough to scare the daylights out of me."
The popularity of this shot from The Changeling has spawned many imitators. There are disturbing balls in many films after The Changeling, but also before. Peter Medak was not the first, before him, great filmmakers like Mario Bava or Federico Fellini featured on screen terrifying bouncing balls, also related to ghost children. In fact, the first scene of a spooky ball bouncing on a staircase dates back to 1930, in the film The Bat Whispers, by Roland West.
We want to pay tribute to this iconic trope by compiling 30 terrifying balls bouncing down stairs and hallways in Horror movies.
