Winston was listed as "Benji" on a Facebook page for an Arkansas kill pen - a champagne baby stallion with no training. We bailed him in late June and quarantined him at the Swingin' D Horse Rescue in Coweta, Oklahoma where we've rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed two dozen horses and two mules.
Winston was wild, terrified and severely malnourished. He was the youngest horse we'd ever rescued at nine months of age, and he taught us a lot about nursing and training horses. Thank goodness for YouTube, for there were many times we encountered new behaviors and ailments that we had no experience with, and others who posted their stories helped us to shape ours.
We've now had Winston for eight months - almost as long as his age when he was abused, neglected and sold for slaughter. I can tell you that with love, patience, acceptance, a firm hand and training at his own pace, he's a different horse...an amazing horse that will one day make an exceptional companion.
