Sand Sharks, also known as dogfish have been washing up on the shore of New York in increasing numbers for the past 2 weeks. Yesterday, 8/14/24 I counted 53 dead along the coast of Southampton.
I have seen 5 or 6 swimming in knee high water which makes me believe they are alive when washing up during the change of tides. Seagulls go for their gills first, as they are easy to tear which is why it appears like they all have bit marks in the same vicinity. I find it quite saddening; locals have expressed great concern and seek more information for this phenomenon.
