San Gorgonio Mountain is the tallest peak in Southern California. At 11,500 FT it towers over the surrounding peaks including Mt Baldy and San Jacinto. Climbing over 20 miles and 5500FT to the summit, the standard San Gorgonio hike to the summit is tough even in perfect summer conditions. While we've enjoyed hiking this peak several times in the summer, we never before had attempted to hike San Gorgonio in winter conditions and wow... was that tough! While the snow, ice, and slushy terrain made the trail conditions a challenge, a clear day in winter on San Gorgonio is a hiker's dream! The views to the surrounding southern California mountains were unreal, the trail peaceful, and the San Gorgonio summit views 100% worth the climb!
