The Coast Express Rail, known as the Coaster, is a commuter railroad running between San Diego and Oceanside, California along the famed "Surfline" route. Since the start of service in 1995, a fleet of 5 Morrison Knudsen F40PHM-2C locomotives, as well as 2 EMD F59PHI locos, have provided service the commuter line. With the recent introduction of the Siemens Charger locomotives, the end of the line has arrived for the F40 locomotives on the Coaster.
In this video, you'll see all 5 of these locomotives as they make their way between San Diego and Oceanside in location order. All videos filmed from 2018 - 2020. It's sad to see another railroad loosing the F40 power, especially growing up in San Diego County with these engines!
