In the last video we’ve introduced addressing to handle more than one slave on the bus and timeouts to bulletproof our communication against unresponsive slaves (link below). But there’s still a potential source of error. Let’s fix that now.

First we have a look at the problem and the solution for it – failsafe biasing. Then we go through all the details and upgrade our hardware accordingly – with two more resistors. Finally, failsafe biasing allows us to greatly simplify our protocol.

00 Intro – removing source of error and simplifying protocol
53 Problem – receivers listening with no transmitter enabled
04 Solution – biasing the bus to above the threshold voltage
21 Assumptions – idle voltage, supply voltage, bus load
11 Bus Load – receivers as resistor plus termination resistors
07 Failsafe Resistors – failsafe current and voltage accross
28 Termination Resistors – one has to be recalculated
03 Failsafe Load – of failsafe resistors on the bus is significant
49 Placement – at one end or both ends of the bus
40 Demonstration I – the bus is now always in a defined state
29 Failsafe Receivers – are an alternative to failsafe biasing
28 Protocol – new version is simpler and saves one MCU pin
23 Code – for master and slave is also greatly simplified
31 Demonstration II – less action and more throughput
28 Wrap-up – next we tackle the full-duplex RS-485 bus, bye
