I bet this robin thought he scored a jackpot when (s)he saw this string. Too bad all they left with was a small length of straw. I went and removed this string after the bird left so no animal would become tangled in it.
I was curious if male or female robins collect nesting material, and it seems both do, but it is the female who actually builds the nest. I came across this website learner.org/jnorth/robin Fun website with lots of info. I am not an expert but I think this is a female based on the lighter color on her head and back.
