Before every right whale research cruise, our scientists participate in safety training! ⚠️
This July, the Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life right whale researchers headed out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence to identify right whales and collect samples.
Prior to heading out on the water, scientists practiced putting on their survival suits, throwing life rings for a "man overboard" situation, and using the hose for any fire-related emergencies.
Each person onboard is required to go through survival at sea + firefighter training before boarding the boat in a safety training course called "Standards of Training and Certification of Watchkeeping" as determined by the International Maritime Organization. Always good to be prepared for any scenario while on the water!
📸: This footage was captured during collaborative North Atlantic right whale research surveys in the Gulf of St. Lawrence with Canadian Whale Institute.
