We are pleased to introduce "Bray," our female African penguin chick! š
"Bray" is the donkey-like vocalization made by African penguins, and is now the name of our newest African penguin chick!
A little about Bray's time behind the scenes:
When she first hatched in March, Bray's parents provided most of her care, just as they would in the wild. As she started to grow, our staff took over parenting duties! We have monitored her 24/7, taught her how to hand feed, watched her downy chick feathers slowly fall off to reveal her first set of waterproof feathers, and even stayed close as she learned to swim safely with these new feathers.
Now, she is officially ready to join her parents, grandfather, and great-grandmother on exhibit! If you're in the Aquarium soon, Bray will be easily recognizable by the green and brown ID bracelet on her right wing + her gray feathers she will keep until she is ~1.5 years old.
