The numbers are in and we're sharing highlights from another summer fieldwork season studying North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence! 🐋
Over the course of three trips, in partnership with the @canadianwhaleinstitute, researchers from our Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life:
• Saw 62 individual North Atlantic right whales
• Witnessed two entangled right whales
• Helped remove 19 sets of lost fishing gear from the ocean
• Collected 23 blow samples (with a drone!) and three fecal samples
• Gathered measurements of about 30 right whales also using a drone
By collecting genetic material from critically endangered right whales and monitoring their movements, our scientists are able to gain insights into their health, behavior, and even their reproductive viability.
