To celebrate hitting 50,000 subscribers, I’m taking on one of the most unique audio preservation projects I’ve ever worked on: a complete restoration of a 1948 Webster-Chicago Model 180 Wire Recorder!
Before magnetic tape took over the world, audio was recorded on microscopic strands of stainless steel wire spinning at high speeds. In this video, we break down the mechanical drive system, replace the dried-up rubber idler wheels and caps, recapped the tube amplifier, and get this piece of 1940s audio history playing again.
