Did you know your favorite swimming or fishing hole might be a “Resting Hole” for fish?
If you see someone snorkeling in your favorite coastal stream when you’re trying to fish, they are there for a good reason. ODFW biologists are out there every August counting Spring chinook, Summer steelhead and Sea-run cutthroat trout, all species that go to the ocean or estuaries before returning to freshwater to spawn. By counting the number of fish in these resting holes, biologists can keep track of trends in fish numbers, which helps them monitor the populations over time.
