Even in the Cenozoic, the so-called Age of Mammals, large reptiles not only survived, but thrived as apex predators in a variety of environments, carving their dominance into the fossil record. These "Cenozoic Dragons" included terrestrial beasts like Barinasuchus and Dentaneosuchus as well as aquatic creatures like Purussaurus, dyrosaurids, and giant gharials. Forty-foot snakes like Titanoboa and Vasuki, the snake that ate whales, ruled marshes and rivers in the Paleocene and Eocene. The planocranids, fast-running terrestrial crocodiles, terrorized Cenozoic Europe for over twenty million years. In Pleistocene Australia, the enormous varanid Varanus priscus and the croc Quinkana were rare apex predators, relegating smaller mammalian carnivores like Thylacoleo into lower levels. Even in a time period known for the ubiquity of mammalian megafauna, reptiles continued to thrive as dominating predators for tens of millions of years.
