Most very hard woods will bow drill nicely if they are well degraded and their density is right. This Red Maple is in that exact state of decomposition.
It took me 3 tries to get good enough video to post. LOL! The bow drill friction fire set was doing it's part. The problem was most certainly operator error... I missed videoing the first successful ember and leaves tinder bundle fire because I was in a hurry and forgot to turn the camera on. My second attempt was also successful, but turned out too blurry. While editing it appeared to me that there was there a bright green area at the top of the screen that kept my auto focus from operating properly. Oh The dread! LOL! I finally got some decent video on my 3rd try.
