Zhang Hongbing, a 60 year old Chinese lawyer said in an interview that he feels deep remorse for contributing to his mother's death when he was a teenager during the Cultural Revolution. Zhang had been a member of the Red Guard, a youth organization that supported Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist regime. Zhang's mother criticized Mao's policies, which prompted a 16 year old Zhang to hand a note to the Red Guard stating that his mother should be executed. Two months later, she was seized by military representatives and executed.
During the Cultural Revolution, family ties were altered and destroyed as children were encouraged to denounce their parents if they did not support the Chinese Communist party.
