The US's largest pork processor, Smithfield Foods Inc. has agreed to be purchased by Chinese company Shuanghui International for a massive $4.7 billion US dollars. If approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), the deal would be the biggest takeover of a US firm by a Chinese one. Already there are words of caution. China's pork industry isn't famed for safety, and the purchase will also mean that Smithfield Foods will be handing over their precious know-how to a foreign competitor. Watch NTD's Chris Chappell and Karen Chang as they digest this takeover bid.

![Meditation Inspires Musician to Create Music that Helps Others
A US-born musician with a rising career. And it was an encounter with a traditional Chinese meditation practice that inspired him to expand his music.
[Drew Parker, Musician, Falun Dafa Practitioner]:
Id always be writing about my own personal feeling of experience, but after I practiced Falun Gong I started to think about OK how will this impact the other person? What kind of feeling? What kind of experience is this song going to create in them? And how can I create a good one? Not just in terms of entertaining someone but how can I give them something that will hopefully make them feel a little bit better about their life or put them in a better mood, or something like that.
Falun Gong, the practice that changed Drews musical career, is a traditional Chinese meditation and self-improvement discipline. Also known as Falun Dafa, the practice was first introduced to the public in China in May, 1992.
Parker came across the practice in 2000. That year was just after the Chinese regime started a nationwide crackdown on Falun Gong. Since then, Parker has used his musical talents to campaign for those persecuted in China.
At this Chinese New Year event in 2004, Parker was part of a chorus to raise awareness of whats happening in China. And this chorus later led Parker to his future wife.
[Christine Parker, Falun Dafa Practitioner]:
In Washington D.C. afterwards some western practitioners got together to sing a song at an event called Coming For You, and we met in that chorus, in the choir.
The couple now has three children and the whole family practices Falun Gong. As well as meditative exercises, it teaches the principles of Truth, Compassion and Tolerance, something Parker says hes grateful for.
[Drew Parker, Musician, Falun Dafa Practitioner]:
Were just so much more harmonious, because we can be patient with each other, we can be kinder to each other.... Everyone wants it to be harmonious, but whether we can actually achieve that is something totally different. But with Falun Gong Ive found, yeah were a family, we still have conflicts and stuff, but they get smoothed over so much faster, and I just feel very, very fortunate about that.
Parkers first solo album On My Way Home reached the entry ballot for the Grammys in 2009. The following year, one track from the album, titled See Me Go received an honorable mention in the Billboard World Song Contest.
On May 8th, Parker performed his song Changed and Amazed in front of Canadas Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Its for World Falun Dafa Day on May 13. A day marked around the world—by those whose lives changed for the better, whilst remembering those who still suffer in China for their beliefs.

![Two Deadly Mine Blasts Kill 40 Workers in China
A deadly mine blast occurred on Saturday in Chinas southwest Sichuan Province, killing 28 miners and injuring 18, state media reports.
Three of the injured are in a critical condition, suffering from extensive burns and gas inhalation.
One survivor had his face mask burnt off during the explosion.
[Ma Tinggang, Injured Miner:]
It was a strong force. I heard a huge boom (from my back). I then saw a fire.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
It was the second deadly mine explosion in China within 24 hours.
In southwest Chinas Guizhou province, twelve miners were killed and two injured on Friday evening in a gas explosion.
One of the injured suffered burns to 95 percent of his body.
This survivor was lucky to be further away from the blast.
[Ma Dayun, Survivor:]
I pinched my nose, lay on my stomach and crawled forward in the darkness. There was no light. I could not see or hear anybody. I kept a cool head, and when I heard the sound of an air extractor coming from above, I climbed to that air outlet.
Corruption, poor safety controls and insufficient safety equipment make Chinas mines the most deadly in the world.
Labour rights groups say mining accidents often go unreported by mine owners, who fear of economic loss and punishment. This means that the almost 2,000 mining deaths reported in 2011 could be even higher.
