A suspicious substance was discovered in an envelope at a United States consulate in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Monday, disrupting normal operations at the building.
Deputy Spokesman Justin Higgins at the US Embassy in Beijing said the envelope was opened in an office where visa interviews are conducted.
No one at the consulate is reporting health issues and precautionary measures were taken to keep the substance away from employees and visitors. The consulate halted some of its operations on Tuesday. Visa interviews were cancelled and are cancelled on Wednesday.
Guangzhou's Evening News reports the suspicious substance was a powder and got onto an employee's clothes. The substance has not been identified yet, and an investigation is still pending.
