Throughout its entire expanse, the Mojave Desert is honeycombed with the ruins of twentieth century mining endeavors. Some of the more well-preserved ruins, that of the Red Cloud Mine are located near the Chiriaco Summit on Interstate 10. This adventure is mostly an off-road route that heads seven miles south of the highway into the Chuckwalla Mountains, for which 4WD is required. However, from the four mile mark, there are various intact structures, wrecked vehicles, other mining detritus, and of course mines to explore on foot. For those that want to also explore a bit of modern history, a stop can be made at the nearby General Patton museum, either before, or after one explores the remains of the lucrative gold mining operation.
