This is one of those castings that when I picked it up I immediately knew what I was going to do with it. Of course the Ford Focus WRC of this era would only look right in a Martini livery as an ode to one of my motorsport heroes: Colin McRae.

This Realtoy casting is very good for a budget entry. The body is a very accurate representation of the Focus while the interior is stripped bare as its WRC name suggests. It works so well, with only a couple of racing seats and a dashboard being all that can be found within. Mine was pretty playworn but you can certainly see the quality of the tampos Realtoy during their prolific period of the mid-2000s.

I'm recreating McRae's Focus from the 2001 season. It was his best with Ford having joined them from Subaru in 1999. Despite starting the campaign with no points on the board after four rallies, a run of three consecutive victories pushed him up the rankings to lead the World Rally Championship by the final round at Rally GB. Going into Rally GB, McRae vied for the title with teammate Carlos Sainz, Mitsubishi's Tommi Mäkkinen, and compatriot Subaru driver Richard Burns.

McRae in his usual "if in doubt, flat out" style was pushing his Focus to the limit. He put one wheel wrong on stage four of the rally and ended up in a multi rollover accident forcing an early retirement. Mäkkinen had already himself retired on stage two, and Sainz also retired after stage eleven. All Richard Burns needed to do was bring the car home in fourth or better to deny McRae his second world title. Burns took third, beating McRae by two points in the final standings.

Sadly, McRae passed away in 2007 after a helicopter crash in which he was pilot. His raw style and determination behind the wheel was inspirational. I thought that this casting was a perfect opportunity to create an ode to Colin.
