Restoring a Lesney Matchbox No. 53B Mercedes-Benz 220 S.E., in the Matchbox range from 1963 until 1968, while testing out airbrushing for the first time!
Airbrush manufacturer Gaahleri reached out asking if I'd like to ditch rattle cans in favour of one of their airbrushes. Being a total beginner, they sent me their Ambition Series kit which included both the airbrush and compressor. In this video I test out the kit by restoring and revisiting a model that I've tackled in the past.
The chosen model was this Lesney Matchbox 53B Mercedes-Benz 220 S.E. which was in the series between 1963 and 1968. This one had been donated to me by Tony and had been crudely repainted red and blue over it's original deep red or maroon bodywork. This over paint had afflicted all of the plastics including the wheels, windows and interior.
It replicates the 1961 to 1971 W111 platform coupé which was based on the original Friedrich Geiger designed sedan from 1958. Paul Bracq reduced the large tailfins on the coupé and cabriolet to a point where they were almost completely invisible, but this was the style that was demanded at the time. It was still beautiful nonetheless, just in its own more elegant way.
