On July 23rd, 2016, the Rotary Club of Mountain Top, PA sponsored an excursion over the Reading & Northern's Lehigh Line from Mountain Top, PA (Penobscot) to Jim Thorpe, PA and return. It was a hot summer day, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.
The locomotive pulling this trip would be Reading & Northern's 4-6-2 Pacific-type steam locomotive #425. The 1928-built engine ws assisted by one of the R&N's GP39RNs, #2531, a rebuilt GP30. The trip operated over portions of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad, as well as the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The engine puts on an awesome show as always, and that Illinois Central three-chime "Steamboat" whistle will send chills up the spine of those trackside. Listen to the incredible sound as the locomotive sounds like a tornado roaring through White Haven!
