In October 2021, the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad was once again running its popular fall color excursions through Pennsylvania's anthracite coal country. Heading up the flagship runs from Reading to Jim Thorpe was the railroad's iconic 4-6-2 no. 425. Despite being helped by two diesels, the blue pacific put on a thunderous display as it hauled a 17-car consist along the Little Schuylkill River and through mountain valleys just hitting the peak of their autumnal brilliance. This was my second chase of the 425 along this route and I have to say I had a fantastic time despite the rather gloomy skies that plagued the weekend. The pounding exhaust of what many consider America's loudest locomotive roaring through the changing leaves of northern Appalachia was a feast for the eyes and ears that I can only hope to have captured a taste of in this video.
